Arsenal plot 'shock move' to sign David Raya's former teammate amid £50m Aaron Ramsdale twist

Arsenal are now eyeing up a surprise move for one Premier League reserve amid doubts about Aaron Ramsdale’s future.

Arsenal are likely to have problems to solve in their goalkeeper department in this summer transfer window.

David Raya has already made his switch to the Emirates Stadium permanent. However, Mikel Arteta will still be uncertain as to who will provide back up to the Spanish shot-stopper next season.

Aaron Ramsdale will likely want to leave the club. At this stage in is career, he needs to be playing regular football, but he is very much behind Raya in the pecking order in North London. If the England star does leave, then the Gunners will need to source a replacement.

Arteta has plenty of options to consider when it comes to potential back up goalkeepers. However, it now seems, despite Arsenal having a target lined up, that Ramsdale could be set to remain on the books after all.

Arsenal keen on Dan Bentley deal after setting Aaron Ramsdale price

According to journalist Alan Nixon, writing in The Sun (07/07/2024, page 57), Arsenal are plotting a “shock move” for Dan Bentley, who is currently the second choice between the sticks for Wolves. He previously spent time on the books at Brentford, where he will have shared a dressing room with Raya.

However, whilst Ramsdale was expected to leave Arsenal this summer, the Gunners are now “unlikely to find a taker” for the former Sheffield United man, having set an asking price of £50 million.

It is also noted, though, that Bentley may still be open to a move to Arsenal, even if it means serving as the third-choice option at the Emirates Stadium, behind both Ramsdale and Raya.

Does Ramsdale need to leave Arsenal this summer?

For the sake of his chances of ever seriously challenging Jordan Pickford for the England No.1 berth, Ramsdale needs to be a regular starter at club level again. It is now clear that Arteta does not consider him suitable for that role with Arsenal anymore.

In his time with the Gunners, though, the 26-year-old has shown that he can shine at Premier League level. Whilst his price tag may present a stumbling block, there would certainly be plenty of top level clubs willing to take him on if an agreement with Arsenal can be reached.

Ramsdale has already publicly discussed the pain that losing his Arsenal place has caused him. He now needs to give up on his Gunners dream and push for an exit.
