Report: John Percy shares Steve Cooper’s next transfer ‘priority’ after signing Bobby Decordova-Reid

New Leicester City manager Steve Cooper is trying to assemble a squad capable of staying in the Premier League.

With the departure of both manager Enzo Maresca and star player Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Chelsea it has been a difficult start to the summer for Leicester City.

However, both of those exits played their part in ensuring Leicester are expected to have successfully navigated the 30th June PSR deadline; the £10 million compensation for Maresca and £30 million for Dewsbury-Hall seeing them through.

Now, Steve Cooper can concentrate on bringing players into the club to bolster the ranks ahead of a return to the Premier League and should have some money to spend despite Leicester’s financial concerns.

Steve Cooper has identified Leicester City priority

Leicester have already made two signings this summer in the shape of 18-year-old midfielder Michael Golding from Chelsea and free agent Bobby De Cordova-Reid.

Last season’s loanee Abdul Fatawu is set to make his deal permanent for £14 million, whilst the club also look set to wrap up a deal for Atalanta defender Caleb Okoli for a fee in the region of £12 million.

Once these deals are concluded, Cooper will look to continue to strengthen his side and Telegraph journalist John Percy has reported that ‘another forward is thought to be the priority’ for the Foxes.

Given Kelechi Iheancaho has left the club following the expiration of his contract and Tom Cannon could be allowed to leave on loan this summer, it makes sense that Cooper is determined to add a striker.

With just 37-year-old Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka likely to be at the club next season, a new man to lead the line could be key to survival.

Which strikers have Leicester been linked with?

So far, Leicester have been linked with moves for surprisingly few strikers.

However, with the Premier League PSR deadline having now passed, expect the club to step up their efforts to bring in a new forward.

One player that has been linked is former Barcelona striker Martin Braithwaite, with the 33-year-old available for just £500k due to a release clause in his Espanyol contract.

Cooper is unlikely to feel that Braithwaite is of a high enough quality to be the player who fires Leicester to safety, though.

Aside form Braithwaite, there has been very little in the way of strikers linked with a move, but Chris Wood could be an option following the end of his Nottingham Forest contract given he worked with Cooper previously.

With a striker the next priority, it will be one to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
