Travelers who look for hotels with character may be interested in the newest inductees of Historic Hotels Worldwide, a collection of properties that includes former chateaus, palaces and monasteries.
A total of 75 properties representing independent hotels from four continents and 20 countries have been inducted into the group, with the majority coming from Europe.
With 18 hotels, France scored the biggest number of hotels, followed by the UK (13) and Canada (12).
All of the Canadian inductees are Fairmont-branded hotels that span the entire country, from Vancouver to Montreal.
In order to be considered for inclusion into the group, hotels must meet a long list of criteria that include: be at least 75 years of age; utilize historic accommodations; serve as the former home or be located on the grounds of the former home of famous persons or significant location for an important event in history; or be located in or within walking distance to a historic district, historically significant landmark, place of historic event, or a historic city center.
The property must also be recognized by a local preservation organization or national trust and display historic memorabilia, artwork and photography.
Asia received nods for seven hotels.
