MUJI’s Unglazed Stones – Enjoy Pleasant Aromas with Minimal Effort

There are many people who incorporate pleasant aromas into their daily life using things like incense and diffusers. However, there are many factors to consider when investing in some of these products: Does it use fire? Does it need to be close to a power outlet? If you are wondering if there is any way to enjoy aromas in your home without using fire or electricity, then MUJI has the perfect product for you!

"Unglazed Stones" - Simply Add a Few Drops of Scented Oil

That product is their pack of "Unglazed Stones," retailing at 650 JPY (incl. tax). They come in a resealable bag, and each pack contains 10 stones.

In the picture, the light gives the stones a pink tinge, but they are in fact pure white. When touched, they leave a light powder on your fingers - think of it as something akin to chalk.

The stones are placed on top of porcelain or any other type of tray, and then essential or scented oils are added to them. The oils then seep into the stone and release the fragrance, so there is no need for fire or electricity, one selling point of this product. While the cost is slightly on the pricier end at 650 JPY, once the scent weakens, you can add more oil and repeat the process to get the most out of each stone.

Recommended for Smaller Spaces

I had a small amount of leftover rose fragrance oil in my house, so I tried pouring a few drops onto the stones. The oil seeped into the stones and immediately began filling the room with its fragrance.

There are many comments online stating that the stones smell bad. However, I myself did not feel this very strongly and identified much more with those that stated the stones were simple and easy to use.

Perhaps it was that I had used too much oil, or perhaps it was that I simply got used to it, but the scent seemed too strong for me at first. However, this did abate in time to a point where it no longer bothered me. The aroma lasted for about 24 hours in the area directly around the stones, but when I moved further away, there were times when there was no scent at all. Therefore, rather than larger spaces such as living rooms, I would recommend these stones for smaller spaces such as entrance halls, restrooms, desks, or nightstands. They might also be good for areas like shoe racks in which unpleasant smells tend to linger. In my case, I use leftover perfumes because I cannot be bothered to purchase new oils and I am also trying to keep costs down. These stones are a safe way to make any space smell pleasant and nice, so why not give them a try?
