Gina Rodriguez Soaring To New Heights As Producer Of 'Diary Of A Female President'

Gina Rodriguez will be executive producer for a new series called "Diary of a Female President," ordered by Disney's upcoming streaming service, Disney+.

What we know about the series

The new comedy series will feature 10 half-hour episodes in a single-camera format and will follow a Cuban-American 12 year old girl—through her diary—as she struggles with the rollercoaster that is high school on her journey to becoming the president of the United States.

Diary of a Female President was created and written by Ilana Peña, who previously worked on The CW series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Robin Shorr (The Carmichael Show) will serve as the showrunner and executive producer alongside Rodriguez and Emily Gipson. The latter two are set to produce the show via Rodriguez's I Can & I Will Productions, under CBS Television Studios.

It's an exciting time for Rodriguez, who is currently working on the final season of the popular CW series Jane the Virgin(for which she received a Golden Globe in 2015) and executive producing its upcoming spinoff, Jane the Novella. Born and raised in Chicago, and serving as a role model for the Latino community, Rodriguez kicked off her career in 2004. She first appeared on TV in an episode of Law & Order. Her work includes films like Deepwater Horizon(2016), Ferdinand(2017), Annihilation(2018), and Someone Great(2019).

Diary of a Female Presidentis expected to boost the Latino community to encourage its youth to pursue a political career or otherwise become more actively involved in politics. Following the popularity and notoriety of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Latinxs of all backgrounds stand to increase their representation and get a bigger voice in a country where diversity is of the utmost importance. So it's good to see more series further this cause.

Disney+

Disney+ is set to come out later this year, and Disney is making sure its exclusive offers are appealing to both new and old audiences alike. As such, Diary of a Female Princessis but one show among many in the platform's upcoming lineup, which also includes Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian(set in the Star Warsuniverse), a Rogue Oneprequel series starting Diego Luna, and a TV-series adaptation of High School Musical, among others.
