A whole new cast

The first and second season has Claire Foy and Matt Smithportray Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip respectively, with their performances receiving critical acclaim. The plan for the show, however, was always to depict the Queen's life over several decades throughout a total run of six seasons, changing the main cast every two seasons to better portray the Royal Family's aging lives. Season 3 introduces the first cast turnover, and though we'll dearly miss Foy, Smith, and the rest of the gang, the sheer quality of the incoming actors and actresses makes us excited for what's to come.

Appearing alongside Olivia Colman, the third season will feature Tobias Menziesas Prince Philip, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Ben Danielsas Tony Armstrong-Jones, Josh O'Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Dohertyas Princess Anne, Marion Baileyas the Queen Mother, and Jason Watkinsas Prime Minister Harold Wilson. Peter Morgan, who wrote the 2006 film The Queen, returns as principal writer for the show's new season.

And a whole new plot too

While the first and second seasons depicted the periods from the Queen's wedding to Prince Philip in 1947 to, roughly, the birth of Prince Edward in 1964, the third season is set to cover, all in all, the events from 1964 to 1977—including Harold Wilson's time as Prime Minister, the Apollo moon landing, the Aberfan Disaster, the decolonization of the Caribbean and Africa, and Princess Margaret's scandalous affair with Roddy Llewellyn. So, we can all expect an emotional roller coaster of top-quality historical drama and superb acting.

The Crown will return on November 17 this year, exclusively on Netflix.
