Here's Our First Look At 'Stardust', The David Bowie Biopic

Salon Pictures has released the first image from Stardust, the upcoming biopic about David Bowie with Johnny Flynn as the title character. Flynn sits in what appears to be a booth at a diner, sporting an outfit straight from Bowie's long-hair period, when he first toured the United States in the early stages on his career. With a cigarette resting between his fingers, "then another finger," Flynn's Bowie gazes directly at us. The image is so striking, it has set the bar very high for the movie.

The film, directed by Gabriel Range and written by Christopher Bell, was announced in January and almost immediately sparked criticism, when Duncan Jones, Bowie's son, tweeted that no music rights had been bought yet. Jones was also quick to clarify that the film did not have the family’s blessing. Either way, the movie will be the story of one of David Bowie's most major career moves, rather than a whole biopic. That is, rather than being a story of his life, the film will focus on the period in which Bowie started developing his extravagant persona, the trip he took around the United States, and the music that influenced him the most.

Flynn recently starred in Michael Pearce’s Beast, a BAFTA winner, and co-starred in the adaptation of the 19th-century novel by William Makepeace Thackeray. Stardustwill have him as the lead character, focusing on his music, his becoming a fashion icon, and his first road trip in America in 1971, just before he created the Ziggy Stardust persona. Jena Malone and Marc Maron have also joined the cast as Bowie's wife Angie and Bowie's publicist, Rob Oberman, respectively.
