The announcement was made Tuesdayby Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich, confirming that Warner Bros. And Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and distribute the new entry, Variety reported.
“We could not be more excited to be re-entering the Matrix with Lana,” said Emmerich in a news release. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

The announcement could not have come at a better time, with the legendary first Matrixfilm celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.The trilogy was a groundbreaking phenomenon with its unprecedented action sequences, technical achievements, pioneering special effects, and philosophical treatment of profound questions about reality as a whole.
Originally written by the Wachowski sisters, the franchise centers around a dystopian future whererobotic machines and artificial intelligence have enslaved humanity to drain energy out of their living bodies. Humans are kept under control by connecting their conscious minds into acomplex computer simulation, known as 'The Matrix'—where they live out their lives unaware that anything at all is wrong or that what they see, smell, taste, hear, and feel is simulated to begin with.
Due to its intriguing concept and the masterful execution of its themes, the Matrix franchise has become a staple of science fiction and a centerpiece of philosophical discussion about reality and knowledge.That's no easy feat—and it led the films to ultimately gross over $1.6 billion worldwide.
“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” Lana Wachowski told Variety. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

What else do we know so far?
Though theplot details are yet unknown,we can hopefully expect the new film to stay true to the spirit of the originals given Wachoski's commitment to a personal project she's passionate about. The fact that Moss and Reeves are back is a good sign as well.It'll be a specially good thing to see the latter joining the project at this point too, since 2019 has been such a hit year for Keanu (John Wick 3 was a massive success, and let's not forget that the beloved actor became "the internet's sweetheart" a few weeks ago).
It's still not clear, however, what'll become of Laurence Fishburne's character, Morpheus—a central piece of the Matrix puzzle in the original trilogy. According to Variety, the role might be recast.
Wachoski wrote the script alongside fiction writer Aleksandar Hemon and novelist David Mitchell, withproduction set to begin in early 2020.
