A cool promotion

The news comes after the Bernie actor spent nearlyfour years working as a visiting instructor at the same university, where he co-taught the Script to Screen film production class alongside faculty member and director Scott Rice.

McConaughey is credited withdeveloping the Script to Screen's curriculum, which takes an in-depth look behind the scenes of the numerous stages involved in a film's production.

As the university's announcementreads,

"In recognition of his outstanding work as a teacher and mentor to University of Texas students, and with respect to his career as an award-winning actor and producer, Matthew McConaughey has been appointed as a professor of practice at the Moody College of Communication starting in the fall 2019 term."

What does "Professor of Practice" even mean?

To be clear, 'Professor of Practice' is a title reserved for faculty who're working full-time on a non-tenure-track position. These kinds of professors have the full dignity and responsibility of a teaching faculty member—though not yet as prestigious as a "full" Professor (i.e. the destination of the tenure track).

McConaughey's track record

During previous years, McConaughey would analyze his own films for his shared class, including Free State of Jones, White Boy Rick, and The Beach Bum, in order to scrutinize how the whole production system works from start to finish. It makes sense, after all, since the actor is better prepared to talk about the process from his own perspective in his own productions than in anyone else's.

Now, having been "promoted" to a professor of practice, McConaughey is ready to take full control over the course.“It’s the class I wish I would have had when I was in film school," the actor said. "Working in the classroom with these students gives me a chance to prepare them. Making movies, turning words on paper into film, is both a science and art – no matter the time or generation. The elements of truth and genuine joy for the process are timeless. That will always be our classroom focus.”

McConaughey has gained the respect of many in the film industry for his outstanding performances in various iconic films and television shows, including Dazed and Confused, A Time to Kill, The Wolf of Wall Streetand Dallas Buyers Club, the last of which earned him an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

But that's not the only area where the 49-year-old celebrity has gained respect. According to the university, he's also been recognized as a good educator, committing himself to the success of his students even beyond the classroom.“He has a passion for teaching, and for all things cinematic, that is palpable, even infectious,” said the chair of the Department of Radio-Television-Film, Noah Isenberg.

That all sounds pretty great, and it seems congratulations are in order for Professor of Practice Matthew McConaughey—a truly worthy title.
