‘Hocus Pocus 2’ Is Allegedly Happening, But It Doesn’t Seem Right

Disney, please repeat this 100 times “I don’t have to bring back every single movie I’ve made to make money.” Seriously, what’s with all the reboots, sequels, and remakes? Yes, our generation might be a little too nostalgic, but that doesn’t mean everything has to come back. There are some stories that are great just the way they are and that we’ll keep watching over and over no matter what. And, naturally, that’s the case with Hocus Pocus.

According to Collider, the classic Halloween favorite is getting a sequel… or a reboot… or a remake… it’s not quite clear yet. However, it makes us wonder, do we need it? The answer is, as it has been for the past couple of years, no. For starters, the 1993 classic is already one of the most popular movies of the season, so there’s no need to bring it back to life, since it’s already quite alive. Now, before we keep going with the rant, let’s take a look at the few details we know.

The new movie will be one of Disney+’s (which will be launched on November 12) new projects and already has a writer assigned to work with the script. She is theWorkaholicswriter and producer, Jen D’Angelo, and apparently, besides writing the script, she’s been tasked with trying to convince the original cast to appear in the new project. Now, no one doubts D’Angelo’s abilities (Workaholicsis quite cool), but the task of reuniting the original cast seems unlikely.

Just a couple of years ago, when the idea of making the sequel for TV came up, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy said they weren’t interested in portraying the Sanderson sisters once again. Actually, Midler was quite vocal in saying a new film would be “cheap.” So, just with the fact that it's very unlikely they'll have the amazing trio back, it’s already not worth it.

Now, it’s not clear what the story will be. Would it be a reboot with brand new actors? Not interesting. Is it just a remake, as we’ve seen? Meh, the original is already live-action and quite great. Will it be a sequel? We’d have to see. So, if the original cast were to return, will the movie focus once again on their story, would they make a small cameo to introduce a new group of witches? It doesn’t sound that interesting, to be honest.

So far, this is pretty much all the information there is, which is nothing, just who’s working on the script, since there’s not even a tentative release date, nor an assigned director, and as we’ve seen, not even an official cast. That is, no one involved in the original film (which, by the way, is one of Disney’s worst box-office flops), which makes it even less interesting.

Let’s just hope that Disney executives reconsider and focus on new projects that could actually increase their mostly amazing catalog of films and stop trying to bring back every single film and story that has worked for them in the past. In any case, Halloween is right across the corner and we’ll be able to enjoy the original Hocus Pocusas God intended, at home, wrapped up in a warm blanket, with some delicious snacks.
