Pixar’s ‘Soul’ Will Show How Dreams Are Born And We’re Already Sobbing

What?! A new, ORIGINAL Disney movie?! Finally! Yes, in the vastness of Disney remakes and sequels, we’re finally getting an original movie, but not just any movie: a Pixar original, which, as we know, is a guarantee of amazingness. As the meme says, Pixar movies are all about emotions, so while we already saw what would happen if toys had emotions, cars had emotions, and even what if emotions had emotions, this time we’re going to venture into the what-ifs of the soul. How it forms, how we get one, and how that particular soul will define our tastes, interests, and dreams.

Soulwill tell the story of Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx), a music school teacher whose dream has always been to play at the New York jazz club “The Blue Note.” One day, when he’s really close to fulfilling his life dream, he accidentally falls into a sewer and dies. Of course, the story isn’t as simple as that and things will get a bit (well, actually, a lot), existentialist. Joe, or better said, Joe’s soul is sent to You Seminar, the place in the cosmos where souls are made and assigned.

His job will be finding out the way to get back to his body to fulfill his dream, however, he’ll find out the journey isn’t about finding the way out, but actually finding himself. In his way, he’ll meet a 22-year-old with attitude problems (Tina Fey); together they’ll try to find their own purpose. By the way, Tina Fey helped write her own character, so we know she’ll have some witty and hilarious comebacks.

Soulis directed by Pete Docter, one of Pixar’s most important producers and now chief creative. As he explains, the movie is “an exploration of, where should your focus be?” It’s all about what makes us, well, us. As it’s customary of Pixar, their stories are deep and involve tons of research. I mean, with Coco, creatives traveled all through Mexico capturing every single detail to get it perfect. Soulis no different, and the story has a lot of religious, historical, sociological, anthropological, and even different religious research about the soul.

In a way, though they’re not related, we could say that Inside Outand Soulcan be linked in that they try to explore and understand the most basic of our human essence. While the first one was all about how our emotions work, this is all about how our personalities and thus our purpose in life are shifted before we’re even born.

Soulwill premiere June 19, 2020. Here’s the first official trailer:
