BlackBerry making a comeback with 5G

BlackBerry phones are set to make a comeback.

The devices stopped being made in 2016, and instead BlackBerry licensed out its brand to companies including BB Merah Putih in Indonesia, and Optiemus Infracom in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh.

However, TCL had the rights in all other regions and, earlier this year, they announced that they will "no longer be selling" the devices from August 31.

They said in a statement: "We are grateful to have had the opportunity to meet so many fans from all over the world during our world tour stops.

"The future is bright for both TCL Communication and BlackBerry Limited, and we hope you'll continue to support both as we move ahead on our respective paths."

Now a firm called OnwardMobility has obtained the licence to produce new phones.

The security company has vowed that the 2021 BlackBerry will be "highly secure" and come with "end-to-end security solutions".

They have teamed up with with a subsidiary of Chinese corporation Foxconn to manufacture the new BlackBerry.

John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO, BlackBerry, said in a statement: "BlackBerry is thrilled OnwardMobility will deliver a BlackBerry 5G smartphone device with physical keyboard leveraging our high standards of trust and security synonymous with our brand.

"We are excited that customers will experience the enterprise and government level security and mobile productivity the new BlackBerry 5G smartphone will offer."
