Apple issues apology to WordPress

Apple has apologized and made a U-turn over forcing WordPress to add purchases.

The blogging platform took issue with the tech giant about them enforcing free apps to have premium options on iOS, a similar issue 'Fortnite' developers Epic took up with Apple.

The firm has been accused of unfairly dictating purchases within the apps, which Apple takes a cut from.

At the end of last week, Apple made it impossible for WordPress to update its applications on iPhones and iPads.

Developer Matt Mullenweg tweeted."Heads up on why @WordPressiOS updates have been absent... we were locked by App Store. To be able to ship updates and bug fixes again we had to commit to support in-app purchases for .com plans. I know why this is problematic, open to suggestions. Allow others IAP? New name? (sic)"

However, Apple later fixed the problem and confirmed that the "issue with the WordPress app has been resolved" and apologized for any "confusion" caused.

They added in a statement: "Since the developer removed the display of their service payment options from the app, it is now a free stand-alone app and does not have to offer in-app purchases. We have informed the developer and apologize for any confusion that we have caused."

Mullenweg responded: "My understanding was the previous decision was final, and we had already made many of the arguments people suggested privately over the several weeks the app was locked."
