Indian government announces ban on Chinese apps

The Indian government has announced plans to ban a further 118 Chinese mobile apps.

The move comes amid growing tensions between the world's two most populous countries, with the Indian government revealing plans to ban apps like 'PUBG Mobile' and 'WeChat Work'.

According to India's IT Ministry, it has credible information suggesting that the latest batch of apps were acting against the interests of the country.

The ministry explained that it has received reports of "misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users' data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India".

The government body added: "The compilation of this data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures."

Tensions between the two countries prompted them to deploy more troops in the Ladakh region in June, when clashes led to the deaths of at least 20 Indian soldiers.
