Jerry Falwell Jr. allegedly got drunk, fell down and injured his face less than a week after he stepped down as president of Liberty University following reports that his wife had been having an affair with their pool boy.
According to the transcript obtained by The Huffington Post, at around 2:30 a.m. on August 31, Falwell Jr.’s wife Becki Falwell called 911 to report that her husband was injured, telling the dispatcher that there was “a lot of blood right now.”
Becki said that she had been at church at around 11 p.m. and received a call from Falwell Jr. in which he said he was bleeding from falling down the stairs. When she arrived back at home, she found that all of the doors were locked and had to break in by using a chair to bust through the back door.
Once inside she called the Bedford County, Va., dispatchers for help. Becki was asked if her husband had been drinking, to which she responded, “yes.” The dispatcher then asked if he had been drinking heavily, and she responded, “I’m not going to answer that question.” The dispatcher clarified that drinking alcohol can thin your blood and make bleeding more excessive, and Becki said: “The more I tell you the name, the more you’re going to understand why we’re not talking to you right now.”
Dispatch logs described that Falwell Jr. would not allow his wife to take him to the hospital, and when medics arrived at their house, they saw that he had cuts on his face with one above each eye, one under his left eye, and one across the bridge of his nose. The first responders noted that Falwell said he hit his head on a trash can, and said there was “blood in the area indicated,” and “empty alcohol containers.”
“Jerry had slurred and slowed speech and would repeat things already asked,” noted the officer at the scene.
Liberty University, where Falwell Jr. had been president, is an conservative Evangelical Christian school that forbids drinking alcohol. The school was founded by Jerry Falwell Sr., a televangelist and conservative activist, and after his death in 2007, Falwell Jr. took over his role as president. Falwell Sr. once called alcohol, “the worst, most offensive drug in American society,” and Liberty University’s policy on drinking is so strict that students are reportedly given random blood, breath and urine tests.
Falwell Jr. apparently does not abide by his school’s strict anti-alcohol values, as he has allegedly shown up to school drunk, and then sent inappropriate pictures of his wife to administrators, and even his son.
The pool boy who allegedly had sex with Becki while Falwell Jr. watched also said that the former university president had been intoxicated during their first encounter in 2012. The man, Giancarlo Granda had said that the Falwells’ “lavish lifestyle consisted of heavy drinking and going to nightclubs, which is strictly prohibited by the honor code that they expect everyone else to follow.”
