Xbox Series X/S can instantly play external hard drive games with backwards compatibility

Xbox Series X/S fans will be able to instantly play games stored on an external hard drive.

Microsoft has clarified some questions about backwards compatibility and external storage, with the next generation consoles set to launch in November.

Speaking to Xbox Wire, director of program management Jason Ronald said: "It is easy as unplugging your existing external USB 3.1 HDD or SSD from your Xbox One and connecting it to your Xbox Series X/S and all your games are instantly available.

"You can continue to play your favourite Xbox One games, including backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, directly from the external hard drive."

He also explained that new feature Quick Resume - which allows the new Xbox consoles to pause games in the backgrounds even while others are being played - will work for games on an external hard drive.

The new Seagate Storage Expansion Card - which has been developed for Xbox Series X/S - will also be supported, which is welcome given the amount of backwards compatible games.

Meanwhile, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said the company are keen to keep their gaming experience open to as many people as possible, without forcing them to buy their latest console.

He said: "Microsoft is in the gaming business for the long run, we want to be a platform where hundreds of millions or billions of players can find somewhere to play. Building walls around Xbox, so the only way you can continue the experience you love is to buy a new console this fall - for us, it doesn't seem in line with the values we have as a team."
