News broke early Tuesday that Daryl Morey and the 76ers are in agreement on a deal to make Morey the head of the team’s Basketball Operations. Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news, reporting the two sides are in ‘advanced talks’.
Shortly after, Shams Charania added that Morey will indeed sign a five-year contract to fill the position.
)#### What’s Next for the Sixers?
With the deal appearing to be imminent, the first question to be asked is what does this mean for current General Manager Elton Brand? Brand has held the GM title since 2018. A former first overall pick, Brand has made some head-scratching moves early in his tenure. Those moves include the confusing Al Horford signing of last off-season.
It’s possible Brand will stick around and work underneath Morey. Morey comes with a track record of success and a willingness to make bold moves. He was with the Rockets from 2007-2020 and took home the Executive of the Year award during the 2017-18 campaign. Morey’s time without a job didn’t last long, as he parted ways with the Rockets just a few weeks ago.
The 76ers are undergoing quite the renovation already this offseason, first hiring Doc Rivers as head coach, and now bringing in Morey. It will be interesting to see how the two, and potentially Brand, reconstruct the roster around Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. That is, as long as both remain in the team’s plans.
