Cam Newton will remain the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots. Coach Bill Belichick affirmed his support, saying, “Cam’s our quarterback,” in response to questions about if Newton will be replaced.
Questions arose when Newton was replaced in the fourth quarter during a blowout loss to the Los Angeles Rams Thursday night. The former MVP managed to complete nine passes out of 16 attempts for 119 yards and one interception in the game.
He was replaced by Jarrett Stidham for the rest of the fourth quarter, with 10 minutes remaining.
Stidman was the top QB candidate and was expected to take over as starting quarterback when Tom Brady left the team. However, that changed when the Patriots signed Newton.
Belichick spoke about Stidham possibly becoming the starting quarterback. “Jarrett has worked hard,” Belichick said. “He’s tried to take advantage of his opportunities. But that’s not really the point.”
Newton has been more effective in rushing this season. He has successfully rushed for 451 yards and 11 touchdowns. However, when teams start limiting the rushing offense, he falters on the offensive role.
So far, he has completed 199 out of 301 passes for 2,172 passing yards, five touchdowns and 10 interceptions in this season, so far.
The 31-year-old has responded to the questions about his thoughts on getting replaced. “That’s not my call,” he said. “I’m just doing what I’m asked, with the mentality of getting better, and that’s what I keep planning on doing.”
“We just got to be better, and it starts with me personally,” he said. “Just have to make more plays, and that’s what it comes down to.”
While the former MVP works at improving and get the Patriots going, they have a slim chance to make the post-season.
