Alex Morgan and her family test positive for COVID-19

Alex Morgan and her family have tested positive for coronavirus.

The 31-year-old American soccer star revealed on social media that she had "closed out 2020" by contracting COVID-19 and that her husband Servando Carrasco and their seven-month-old daughter Charlie had also been infected over the Christmas period.

Alex, who has most recently been playing for Tottenham Hotspur in England's Women's Super League, wrote on Twitter: "Unfortunately, my family and I closed out 2020 learning that we had contracted Covid while in California over the holidays. We are all in good spirits and recovering well.

Morgan re-joined US team Orlando Pride from Tottenham last month and is aiming to return to the field once she recovers from the respiratory illness.

She wrote: "After our isolation is completed, I will follow US Soccer's return to play guidelines to ensure my body is fully recovered and I can join my teammates back on the field soon. Be safe and happy new year."

Alex, who has twice won the FIFA Women's World Cup with the US, revealed last month that she would be leaving Tottenham after a brief spell with the team.

In a statement confirming her exit, she said: "I will be forever grateful to the club, my teammates and Spurs supporters for taking such good care of me and my family. From the moment I arrived in London I realised I was part of a first-class organisation, one that helped provide me the opportunity to immerse myself back into the game I love. Thank you to everyone who helped make this chapter in my soccer journey so special … COYS. (sic)"
