Vice President-elect Kamala Harris has formally submitted her letter of resignation and is leaving her seat one of California’s U.S. senators.
Along with her letter, the vice president-elect wrote an op-ed to the San Francisco Chronicle detailing her history, her hopes for Senate cooperation and a meditation on American growth.
Harris wrote that her first time in the Senate chambers was not as a representative, but as an intern. Her experiences led to her belief that “the Senate was a place to turn activism into action,” and that her new position as vice president will be a prime position to make that action happen.
Harris made it clear that her resignation is more a beginning than an end. The incoming vice president wrote, “as I resign from the Senate, I am preparing to take an oath that would have me preside over it.”
Harris also commends Jon Ossoff (D-Georgia) and Rev. Raphael Warnock (D-Georgia) for their recent historic Senate victories.
Harris is due to take her oath of office this Wednesday, January 20 alongside President-elect Joe Biden.
