ESTNN recaps the final DreamHack Open featuring Fortnite of the year.
The DreamHack Online Open featuring Fortnite began in the summer of 2020 when the game’s competitive scene looked murky at best amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully, DreamHack’s last two successful LAN tournaments paved the way for the Sweden-based production company to offer $1M USD to Fortnite’s three most significant regions. Seven months and 21 tournaments later, that deal has seemingly come to an end on the tail end of a DreamHack double-header. It was quite a run, and the NA West region had the privilege of sending this million-dollar journey off with a bang.
Multiple competitors across the United States reached the Grand Finals with one goal in mind; to win DreamHack’s final Fortnite competition. Liquid Riversan, XTRA illest, BBG Khanada and NRG EpikWhale were just a few of the critical contenders who set out to achieve greatness. However, only one duo would call themselves a DreamHack Champion.

Wavy and Favs Stand Tall

The six-hour finalè was not a sprint; it was a marathon between some heavy-hitting duos. As the curtains closed, NA West teammates wavyjacob and favs stood alone as the tournament winners. The two players combined for 32 eliminations and 380 points in an impressive display to the very end. Despite surging NA East adversaries, wavyjacob and favs defended their territory. Both players secured $3.25K USD andclaimed the DreamHack Open Championship.

Khanada, Deyy, EpikWhale and rehx Close Behind

Wavyjacob and favs were undoubtedly the story of the tournament. But last-minute partners Khanada and Deyy did not go without a fight. These two slayers managed a second-place finish, including 33 eliminations and one Victory Royale. An early exit in game eight ended their chances of winning, but it was impressive nonetheless. Consistent contenders 100T rehx and NRG EpikWhale secured third place with two Victory Royales and 362 points.
NA West produced a fitting end to what most would call a well-executed Fortnite tournament series. As the broadcast concluded, the DreamHack desk did not indicate that the company would host any further competitions. If that’s the case, expect fans to campaign for the series’ continuation.
