Nintendo Switch outsold 3DS

Nintendo Switch has overtaken the lifetime sales of the 3DS.

The popular games console has outsold the 3DS - which launched in Japan in 2011 - in the space of four years after selling 79.87 million consoles.

Only 75.94 million 3DS consoles have been sold worldwide since 2011, making the Switch the company's fifth best-selling console behind the GBA (81.5 million), Game Boy (118.7 million), Wii (101.6 million) and DS (154 million).

Switch sales have been up by 7 per cent during the Christmas period of October to December each year, with 27 per cent of those sales for Switch Lite, which is now only a few thousand sales away from beating Wii U's lifetime figure of 13.56m consoles.

It comes after it was announced Nintendo had shipped one million Switch consoles to China since launching in late 2019.

It has become the biggest console in the country after surpassing Microsoft Corp and Sony Corp and beats the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One sales combined.

The news comes after games for the console were limited in China following the coronavirus outbreak but have since soared following the release of 'Ring Fit Adventure' in August.

Gamers have limited access to games as games have to be approved by regulators with only 13 games available but hits such as 'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Bears' and 'Animal Crossing' are still waiting for the green light.
