The year 2020 marked a pivotal shift in public health expenditure.

As COVID-19 hit our health institutions, countries across the world had to pivot financial resources from other sectors to sustain their health systems. The availability of beds, ICUs, ventilators and medical equipment determined how many lives were lost. COVID-19 reinforced the foundational role of public health systems in managing health emergencies, and this is evident in India’s Union Budget for 2020-2021 which places “Health and well-being” at its centre.

A total of 2,23,846 crores were allocated to the Health budget, marking an increase of 137% from previous years.
