Ubisoft's Star Wars game set for 2023 release

Ubisoft's 'Star Wars' game won't be released until 2023.

The video game developer announced an open-world game based on the hit sci-fi film franchise last year and have now hinted the game won't be available to play until 2023 or even later.

Ubisoft exec Frederick Duguet said: "We didn’t mention any specific dates. The game is at an early stage of development, so we will have to wait a bit before telling you more about timing."

The news of the new game suggests Disney have ended their 10-year agreement with EA to exclusively make games of 'Star Wars'.

The two companies made that deal in 2013 and EA has gone on to release a number of 'Star Wars' games, including 'Star Wars: Squadrons' and 'Star Wars Battlefront'.

However, if Ubisoft wait to release their upcoming feature it will ensure EA get their full 10-year deal before the expiration date.

Ubisoft recently revealed the game is in the "early stages" of development as CEO Yves Guillemot said: "On Lucasfilm, we can say we are at the early stage of development on the 'Star Wars' game."

He also revealed the announcement of the upcoming title last month has resulted in an increase in job applications at Massive Entertainment.

He added: "To answer your question about the benefit from that in terms of hiring, yes, we see lots of people wanting to participate in this adventure, and it's really a very good thing."

And while Guillemot wouldn't share a release window for the game, he promised a "ground-breaking" title for 'Star Wars' fans.

He explained: "We are very happy to be partnering again with Lucasfilm Games. The project will be aided by our Massive studio who will make the most of their cutting-edge technology, including the Snowdrop engine, to deliver a ground-breaking 'Star Wars' adventure.

"We are very proud of this collaboration, which is a testament to Ubisoft leadership and expertise, notably in creating amazing works. "It is another demonstration of our capacity to build partnerships with the biggest names in the entertainment and technology space."
