Hades wins big at the Bafta Games Awards

'Hades' won the Best Game accolade at the Bafta Games Awards on Thursday (25.03.21).

The action role-playing video game, developed and published by Supergiant Games, was the big winner at the annual awards ceremony, taking home five gongs in total from the virtual event.

The title also won the Artistic Achievement, Game Design, Narrative, and the Performer in a Supporting Role awards.

Greg Kasavin, creative director at Supergiant Games, explained that completing the game amid the pandemic was a huge achievement.

He told Radio 1 Newsbeat: "The trust that we put in each other - both was tested in some respects but was really just it's what got us through into this.

"It's something to never, ever take for granted - that as a group, we all believe in each other in this way."

Studio director and co-founder Amir Rao thinks the game has provided an entertaining escape for lots of people during the health crisis.

Amir said: "'Hades' was a game that a lot of people played for a long time, and hopefully it helped them in some way, and they came out with a lasting positive impression as a result of their time with it."

Elsewhere, 'The Last of Us Part 2' won three awards at the event, including Audience-voted Game of the Year, Animation and Performer in a Leading Role for Laura Bailey.

The game has provoked widespread controversy because of its depiction of violence, but it's also proven to be hugely popular with critics and gamers.

Meanwhile, 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons' won two awards in total, including the Multiplayer accolade and the Game Beyond Entertainment award.

During the ceremony, host Elle Osili-Wood spoke about the positive impact of gaming amid the pandemic.

She said: "Games, and the developers behind them, have proven themselves to be more essential than ever.

"In 2020, games connected us in a way that wouldn't have been possible a decade ago."
