Day 2 Review of 2021 Mid-Seasonal Invitational

MSI 2021 Day 2 has been very different to first, we knew who to look out for, but the second day provided us with more surprises we could imagine! Every top laner is focused on Armut and every minor league wants to take down the favourites of their group, but who succeeded in their intent?

Peculiar Picks against RGN

The first two matches of the second day presented us with some very unusual champion choices, starting with Decoy’s Lulu in combo with Praedyth’s Kawg Maw and ending with AHaHaCiK’ s Trundle. However nothing mattered against Royal Never Give up, the LPL champions won the two games in a row proving why they deserve to be recognized as possible contendents for this year MSI trophy.

According to Unicorns of Love’s Jungler AHaHaCiK, they tried their best by picking unusual champions, even if this time did not work we could expect UOL to give us even more peculiar picks for this year MSI. Could we also see his favourite champions Nidalee? It could be a risky matchup against RNG but a good surprise pick for OCE’s champions, Pentanet.GG. Everything will do if it helps conquer a second place in the Group Stage!

Cloud9 with another loss

While yesterday DFM lost against Infinity Esports, while C9 was handed the easy win to the LCK’s DWG KIA, today both teams were looking to coming back today to gain some wins to climb their group.

DFM played the game with an early game mindset, maintaining a steady gold lead of 3,500 thanks to good farming and objective control. By putting constant pressure on the map and on their opponent, DFM took away all the comeback possibilities from C9, arriving in a mid-to-late game in which they crushed the North American champions. The decisive choices and plays made by Aria, DFM jungler, made a significant difference in this match.

Overall Cloud 9 made many mistakes that could have been avoided, but Detonation FocusMe were very good at understanding the opportunity their opponents provided them. With this win Detonation FocusMe took a decisive win against North America’s Cloud9, which placed them in fourth place in their group.

MSI 2021 Day 2 standings

During the third match of the day, Infinity Esports lost to a very prepared and great DWG KIA, which was a result everyone saw coming after the previous match of the LCK’s Champions.
The game between was an exciting and close one, however, in the end, the LEC rookies destroyed their opponent’s Nexus and won the game. In the last game of the day, PSG Talon won against paiN Gaming starting from the draft, by picking a convincing team based on the 11.9 patch meta.

At the end of the day we see some results we could have expected, some teams making bold choices that didn’t always pay off.

This just reminds us that MSI is the competition that gives us a preview of what might happen at the Worlds later this year. What other surprises will the Mid-Seasonal Invitational bring us?
