Sony's PlayStation 5 could see supply issues into 2022

Sony's PlayStation 5 could see supply issues into next year.

The latest version of the popular gaming console was unveiled in November 2020 but has been struck with limits on supply since its release date, which are expected to continue into 2022.

Hiroki Totoki, Chief Financial Officer, reportedly said in a non-public meeting: "I don’t think demand is calming down this year and even if we secure a lot more devices and produce many more units of the PlayStation 5 next year, our supply wouldn’t be able to catch up with demand."

Meanwhile, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan hopes the company will sell 100 million units of its new console.

Speaking soon after its release, he said: "I'm not going to make any statements about what our targets for PS5 are. But I see absolutely no reason why anybody couldn't achieve sales of 100 million consoles in this generation. And I see many reasons why that's possible. On the production side, the first wave of the pandemic, when lockdown was really very rigorous pretty much all around the world, made it impossible for us to visit our factories and in person sign off or approve the final manufacturing setup. All of that had to be done remotely, basically by camera. As you can imagine, that is a very, very non-trivial task."
