The color schemes, called Cosmic Red and Midnight Black, are both themed around space and are stark contrasts from the main white controller that was released with the PS5 in November.

The announcement was made via a blog post on the official PlayStation website. Isabelle Tomatis, Senior Director, PS VR, eSports, Peripherals Marketing and Licensing, for Sony Interactive Entertainment, described the details of and the reasoning for the coloring and reiterates the special haptic feedback feature of the DualSense controllers.

Tomatis wrote that the Cosmic Red color scheme “offers a striking black and red design inspired by the unique vivid shades of red found throughout the cosmos.” While the Midnight Sky color scheme “…features two subtly different shades of black with light grey detailing to reflect how we view space through the night sky.”

These two new designs mark the first official alternative designs for the DualSense controller since the PS5 launched. For comparison, Microsoft on the other hand, has released four new color schemes for both the Xbox Series X/S since the original black for the Series X and the white for the Series S. Hopefully, this marks the beginning of Sony experimenting with controller designs more frequently.

Preorders for both controllers are currently live on PlayStation Direct. The Midnight Sky controller is currently listed as $69.99, while the Cosmic Red controller is $74.99. For comparison, the original DualSense controller also costs $69.99.

These two new DualSense color schemes will hopefully provide fans with enough variety for when they play on their PS5.
