Breath of the Wild Guide: How to Pet a Dog, Kind Of

Breath of the Wild is a stunning game for many reasons, however the inability to pet the various animals that inhabit Hyrule is slightly disappointing. Having said that, this guide will teach you a trick to mimic petting a dog, because it’s the closest we’re going to get to the real thing.

Breath of the Wild 2 rumours are heating up as we approach E3 2021 and celebrate the franchise’s 35th anniversary, and even though playable Zelda is a hot topic, animal lovers are still wondering if you’ll be able to pet your loyal steed in the successor – instead of giving it apples.

The four-legged friends can be found throughout the great expanse of Breath of the Wild, specifically near cities, towns, and especially stables in Hyrule.

Border Collies, Huskies, and German Shepherds are some of the breeds that can be interacted with, and there is also an art to bonding with them.

Once you locate a furry canine there is a chance for you to bond with it and have it follow you around for a little while.

The trick is to crouch down in front of the dog and maintain eye contact. Once you’ve established a connection, the dog will emit a pink cloud signaling that you now have the dog’s undivided attention.

Once you bond with the dog, it is then the perfect opportunity to ‘pretend’ to pet it.

If you unequip Link’s melee weapons and stay crouched next to the dog, you can then push the button you would usually use to perform an attack.

It’s not a perfect maneuver, but if you position the camera angle correctly, Link’s hand gesture will look as though he is petting the dog if you’re crouching close enough.

This pretend petting will be enhanced if the dog continues to emit his pink cloud as you pet it, which could be a sign of its enjoyment.
