PS VR Exclusive Fracked Releasing This Summer

Upcoming PS VR game Fracked got a new preview today, via a PlayStation Blog post from the game’s developer, nDreams. The blog post provided a few new details on the skiing/shooting/eco-terrorism simulator, including a new release window of summer of this year.

Fracked is essentially a VR action movie, complete with a helicopter sequence, bad guys destroying the planet for profit, and explosive barrels, conveniently colored red. One way nDreams is attempting to make the player feel like an action hero is by giving the player a variety of choices.

That is to say, instead of being an on-rails game focused on shooting, the player gets to decide how they want to approach things. What gun to use, where to go, how to get there, these are all things that nDreams are leaving up to the player.

nDreams last VR title, Phantom: Covert Ops, was an on-rails shooter. Despite that, nDreams was still able to innovate, again through movement. Phantom: Covert Ops had a unique approach to movement in a virtual space, being that the main character was confined to a kayak.

Fracked seems to be an attempt at a new form of movement in virtual reality, this time through verticality. Whether skiing down a mountain, climbing a ladder, or spelunking down a mine shaft, Fracked sets out to prove that movement in VR can be utilized more effectively.

With a lot of video game experiences (even in VR), you’re stuck on a flat plane of existence… they’re often stationary with little lateral movement in the 3D space. With Fracked, we wanted to offer something more, a game that shows off the verticality of the virtual environment.
