Fortnite: New Season 7 Arena Mode Point System Explained, More Changes To Come?

Fortnite Battle Royale players worldwide are deep in the trenches of Chapter 2 - Season 7. The season has objectively been one of the best in a long time. Epic Games has taken a conscious approach to satisfy both casual and competitive players. For the non-sweats, there are new weapons such as the Rail Gun, Recon Scanner to accompany pilotable Flying Saucers. Competitive players have enjoyed an entirely segmented loot pool without any of the previously mentioned weapons and vehicles in the equation.

Epic Games released patch v17.10 earlier today, and it’s perhaps the most robust in quite a long time. Competitive players finally saw their Arena Mode ranks reset to zero after an extended preseason period. Epic used this time to change Arena Mode scoring, offering more placement points while keeping elimination points the same. It’s the first real adjustment to Arena Mode of late, and more could be coming, according to Epic Games.

Not many changes have occurred in Arena Mode over the last few seasons, so Epic is experimenting with different scoring systems based on placement. While division and elimination points remain the same, Epic has divided more placement points in solo, duo and trio playlists.

Are the Changes Any Good?

As Epic stated in a tweet following Fortnite’s latest update, this is their attempt at improving Arena Mode. While placement points are more prominent, solo scoring remains identical. Nine eliminations still equal a Victory Royale in terms of points. The same applies to duo and trio scoring, which is a significant adjustment.

Before, duo and trio formats required 18 and 25 eliminations to equal a Victory Royale, according to Fortnite analyst Reisshub. The best path to The Champion League is to find two friends and run through trio Arena lobbies, given the point boost. Bus Fare remains the same, as does the fact that you cannot de-rank.

The changes are a step in the right direction, even if Epic Games still values eliminations over placement. Unfortunately, the issue of “dead lobbies” remains in effect. Players don’t have much incentive when there’s nothing to lose in Arena matches and only ranks to gain. They can push and fight opponents without losing stats.
