Phoebe Bridgers: TikTok has destigmatised mental health

Phoebe Bridgers thinks TikTok has helped “destigmatise therapy and mental health”.

The 26-year-old singer has hit back at the common belief that social media has been harmful to the mental health of many people, as she believes sites like TikTok actually create a healthy environment for people to talk about their mental health without stigma or judgement.

She said: “There’s way more good about TikTok than bad. Within the context of the world that we are in, TikTok is great ... But, for the most part, I think it’s a good thing that therapy and mental health is destigmatised.”

However, Phoebe – who is dating ‘Normal People’ star Paul Mescal – is still cautious not to overshare on social media because she’s “terrified” about reading her own Twitter posts in the future.

She added: “I am terrified of myself reading my tweets from now, in five years' time. I don't want to be embarrassed and like, ‘Ugh you were 26 and tweeting about UTIs – what were you doing?’ ”

The ‘Kyoto’ singer also spoke about the importance of self-care.

She explained to the latest issue of Porter magazine: “Taking a second for your life is important and was discouraged by the generation before us. Like taking a moment and making your apartment smell nice, or whatever. It’s not a means to an end, it is the end.

“To me, I feel like the biggest piece of self-care advice is clean your house like your crush is coming over. Pick the trash you’ve been ignoring up off the table.”

Meanwhile, Phoebe recently said she doesn’t “believe” in straight people.

She said: “I don’t know — I actually don’t believe that anyone is, like, entirely straight. I just don’t believe in straight people! It’s like, how? It’s 2021!”
