Flying car takes to the skies

A flying car has completed a 35-minute flight.

The prototype car-aircraft hybrid, AirCar - which is equipped with a BMW engine and runs on regular petrol - successfully took to the skies to travel between international airports in Nitra and Bratislava in Slovakia.

It takes two minutes and 15 seconds to transform the vehicle from car into aircraft, with the wings folding down along the sides when it's not in the sky, and it's creator, Prof. Stefan Klein, drove the vehicle straight from the runway and into town when he touched down in Bratislava.

The professor described the journey as "normal" and "very pleasant".

In the air, the vehicle - which can carry two people with a combined weight limit of 200kg - reached a cruising speed of 170 km/h, and the professor explained it is capable of flying around 1,000km at a height of 8,200ft.

Unlike drone-taxi prototypes, AirCar cannot take off or land vertically and requires a runway.

Klein Vision, the company behind AirCar, said the prototype has taken about two years to develop and cost "less than two million euros" in investment.

Anton Rajac, an adviser and investor in Klein Vision, is hopeful the vehicles will be a huge success.

He said: "There are about 40,000 orders of aircraft in the United States alone.

"And if we convert 5% of those, to change the aircraft for the flying car - we have a huge market."
