Facebook prompts for users worried about friends becoming extremists

Facebook is testing prompts asking if you're worried about friends becoming extremists.

The social networking platform has rolled out the update to some users in the US and also started notifying users that they could have been exposed to extremist content.

One alert shared on Twitter reads: "Are you concerned that someone you know is becoming an extremist?

"We care about preventing extremism on Facebook. Others in your situation have received confidential support."

It contains a link to support resources, as does a second alert which reads: "Violent groups try to manipulate your anger and disappointment. You can take action now to protect yourself and others."

In a statement, a Facebook spokesperson revealed the site is working with "NGOs and academy experts" to continue to do more in this area.

They said: "This test is part of our larger work to assess ways to provide resources and support to people on Facebook who may have engaged with or were exposed to extremist content, or may know someone who is at risk.

"We are partnering with NGOs and academic experts in this space and hope to have more to share in the future."
