What to Expect from Marcelo Mayer in Boston

On Sunday night, the Boston Red Sox added more talent to their farm system. With the fourth overall pick in the MLB Draft, the Red Sox selected shortstop Marcelo Mayer. The 18-year-old was projected to be picked No.1 overall in most mock drafts. With Henry Davis, Jack Leiter, and Jackson Jobe going in the top three, Boston had an unexpected chance at Mayer.

In 34 games during his senior season, Mayer hit .324. The California native added 14 home runs to finish up his high school career. In a draft that was full of talented infielders, Mayers stood out due to his all-around game. The Red Sox’s newest infielder has an advanced approach at the plate and is just as good defensively.

The fourth overall pick also has a quick swing and a strong arm. He is projected to stick at shortstop for a long time and has drawn comparisons defensively to Brandon Crawford. The Red Sox already have Xander Bogaerts, but Mayer is a dynamic talent.

While Mayer has only been part of the Red Sox organization for less than 24 hours, he is already one of the top 37 prospects in baseball. Once he signs with Boston, he will likely become one of the team’s top three prospects. For a farm system on the rise, they now have one of the best prospects in baseball.

Prior to the draft, Mayer’s offense drew comparisons to Chipper Jones. He barrels up the ball consistently and has a good eye for the strike zone. Even though he showed some power in High School, he is expected to add more as he gets older. So far this season, Boston has surpassed expectations with a very talented group of prospects waiting in the minors that will now include Mayer.

Why Marcelo Mayer is a Steal for Boston

In the 2021 draft, the top five were fairly close. Mayer, however, was consistently the most talked-about prospect and the best high school player. He also attended the same high school as Adrian Gonzalez. Despite not having the No.1 overall pick, Boston ended up with the player who was viewed by many as the best in the draft. While the Red Sox focus is on breaking their postseason drought, their future got brighter on Sunday night with the selection of Marcelo Mayer.

Although Mayer grew up a Yankees fan, he said on ESPN, ” I’m the biggest Red Sox fan of all time now.”
