First reported in 2019, GMC has finally opened up about its plans about an electric pickup truck, and we’re not talking about the Hummer EV. That’s because Duncan Aldred, who serves as global vice president of Buick and GMC, notes that another electric pickup truck would debut in “due course.” While the GMC Sierra EV name was not explicitly disclosed, the expectation among analysts, dealers, and media is that it will be so.

The confirmation of an electric GMC Sierra EV pickup truck comes after Chevrolet confirmed a Silverado EV, which came after the debut of the Hummer EV, which is loosely branded as a GMC, and will be sold exclusively in GMC showrooms.
All of these vehicles will be powered by GM’s new Ultium battery technology, and will be exclusively built at the $2 billion GM Factory Zero plant in Detroit, formally known as Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly. The 2024 Hummer EV SUV will also be built there, and it’s expected that future electric variations of the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade will be built there, as well. All of these vehicles will ride on the GM BT1 platform.

The GMC Sierra EV will likely launch alongside the Chevrolet Silverado EV, which is set to launch in 2023 as a 2024 model year vehicle. And, if the stats are identical to that of the Silverado EV, the GMC Sierra EV could have a maximum estimated range of 400 miles.
General Motors CEO Mary Barra previously described the Silverado EV as “stunning.” And GMC dealers previously confirmed the existence of a future electric pickup truck.
When the GMC Sierra EV and Chevrolet Silverado EV eventually do come to market, they will have a heaping dose of competition. Electric trucks such as the Ford F-150 Lighting, Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T will already have been on the market. Upstart offerings, such as the Bollinger B2, are also expected to be on the market by then.
