Multiple anonymous sources have told MC&T that GM’s next-generation midsize truck program that envelopes the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups has seen a bit of turbulence, but ultimately will see the light of day.
Intel is scarce, but what we have come to understand is that GM’s future midsize truck program was being developed primarily in Brazil. However, recent volatility in South American markets has left the program to be a shell of its original mission. No longer is there a 32xx truck program, as previously reported by multiple outlets.

Here’s what we know. We’re expecting a new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon to launch sometime during or after 2023, utilizing a platform called 31xx-2. The program is also expected to cover the global Colorado pickup, which is sold in Thailand, Australia, and other markets. Currently, the global midsize trucks and the the US/Canadian market midsize trucks are related, but ultimately different. This is expected to change with 31xx-2.
Being that the current-generation trucks are under the 31xx program, it would be safe to assume that the next round of midsize trucks would be evolutionary, rather than revolutionary. Which, to us, is just fine. The formula worked out well for the Corvette (C5-C7), and Dodge has seen success with the Charger and Challenger by slowly evolving the vehicles each year. Current safety regulations are also in sync with what these platforms can support, as well.
The 2020 Holden Colorado, sold exclusively in Australia and New Zealand. It’s on a related, but different platform than the Chevrolet and GMC midsize trucks sold in North America.
We’re fans of the current-generation of mid-size GM trucks, especially the rugged Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. Going forward, we’d love to see more variants of the truck, or perhaps even a body-on-frame SUV to do battle with the highly anticipated Ford Bronco and stalwart Jeep Wrangler. Who knows, maybe even a Hummer, as well.
