The Chicago Cubs continue to tear down their roster. Minutes before the deadline, Chicago dealt outfielder Jake Marisnick to the San Diego Padres in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza.

Marisnick, 30, is slashing .227/.294/.438 with five homers, 22 RBI, nine walks, and 43 strikeouts over the course of 65 games (128 at-bats) in 2021. The former Blue Jays third-round pick spent 2013 with the Marlins before a 2014 trade sent him to the Astros, with whom he played most of his career and even won a World Series ring. He played with the Mets in 2020 before latching on with Chicago.
Espinoza is another well-traveled player who is no stranger to deadline deals. Now 23, Espinoza was signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in 2014. He was then traded to the Padres for Drew Pomeranz in 2016 and has been with San Diego ever since. A brutal arm injury shut him down from 2017 through 2019, and he missed all of 2020 due to the minor league season being canceled. In 2021, he is 0-1 with a 5.02 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and .264 OBA. He’s amassed just 28.2 innings over 12 starts, which suggests that the Padres have wisely eased him back in slowly.
All in all, the Padres cap off their peculiar deadline by adding a solid depth outfielder who can provide offense off the bench.
