USMNT Wins Their Seventh CONCACAF Gold Cup

The United States men’s national soccer team has passed the test. A hard-fought 1-0 win against Mexico in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final gives the USMNT its second title this summer. With this test in the books, the club is ready for its next test: World Cup qualifying. The qualifiers begin in September.

The USMNT came into this tournament without their big names. They capitalized on the opportunity of giving experience to young players. In this case, not only did these players gain experience, but they now have a title under their belt. Furthermore, it’s the first time the United States has defeated Mexico in back-to-back title games. The national team’s future now looks even brighter.

The lineup for the USMNT for the final was the second-youngest squad ever for a tournament final. Their average age for this 23-man squad was about 25 years, including seven players under the age of 23. In addition, the squad’s average number of caps was 13. Furthermore, a majority of the players play for the MLS. It’s no exaggeration to say that the United States came into this tournament as an inexperienced team.

Matt Turner was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper. He started every game, conceding only one goal and keeping a total of five clean sheets. His five saves in the final would help him be named Man of the Match. Miles Robinson‘s game-winning goal in the 117th minute secured the win. A total of 39 clearances and 21 interceptions is strong resiliency by the defense. Mexico had many chances to score but could not finish.

Overall, the United States won the only way possible… as a team. The USMNT passed their big test with flying colors and are ready for the next big challenge. This year, the United States has only lost one game, in an exhibition against Switzerland. They hold an impressive 8-0 record in competitive matches, which includes this Gold Cup triumph. The team is eager to keep the streak alive, starting next month.
