U.S. Pushing To Move Thousands Of Afghans Who Helped Military To Qatar

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN - AUGUST 14: Afghans wait in long lines for hours at the passport office as many are desperate to have their travel documents ready to go on August 14, 2021 in Kabul, Afghanistan. Tensions are high as the Taliban advance on...

After the fall of Kabul to the Taliban on Sunday, the Biden administration is reportedly planning to relocate thousands of Afghans, who helped the U.S. military, to Qatar.

The administration is currently finalizing a deal with the Qatar government to house these Afghans temporarily.

Once both parties finalize their agreement, the first one or two thousand Afghans will arrive in Doha.

“We are evaluating all available options. We have no announcements to make on third-country relocation sites for Afghan SIV applicants,” a State Department spokesperson said.

Since the United States started to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, the situation in the country has been rapidly worsening. On Sunday, the Taliban entered Kabul, the country’s capital city, and the president fled the country.

“We are certainly concerned by the speed with which the Taliban has been moving,” Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said in a Friday press conference. “We’re obviously watching this just like you’re watching this and seeing it happen in real time, and it’s deeply concerning.”
