Chris Cuomo, a news anchor on CNN and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo‘s brother, has revealed that he had urged his brother to resign following sexual assault allegations made against him.

Gov. Cuomo is expected to step down next week. By that time, it will be more than two weeks after New York Attorney General Leticia James and her office found that he had sexually harrassed around a dozen women.

Chris Cuomo explained on Monday why he did not speak about this scandal earlier before his brother announced that he would step down.

“I can’t be objective when it comes to my family, so I never reported on the scandal,” he said. “And when it happened, I tried to be there for my brother. I wasn’t in control of anything. I was there to listen and offer my take.”

He added that he told his brother to “own” what he did, tell everyone what he will do to get better and encouraged him to be contrite. He also said that it does not matter to anyone what the governor thought his intentions were – but how they were perceived.

The CNN anchor also emphasized that he did not mislead anyone, though critics have blasted his silence about his brother.
