High speed 5G mobile internet is on its way to all General Motors vehicles that will come off the assembly line for the next 10 years. The Detroit automaker has teamed up with AT&T to raise the bar in automotive connectivity while looking to the future of all-electric and autonomous driving needs. Advancements that will be coming with the new 5G network are improved roadway-centric coverage and faster music and video downloads with higher quality.

Customers will also notice faster navigation, mapping, and voice services. Customers that have vehicles integrated with GM’s Vehicle Intelligence Platform (aka Global B electrical architecture) will experience faster, more reliable, and secure over-the-air software updates. Some of these vehicles are the C8 Corvette, Cadillac CT4 and CT5 families, 2021+ Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade, as well as the upcoming 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks.
For GM vehicles that already have a 4G LTE network on models 2019 and newer, the seamless connection over to 5G speeds will probably be instant once the network is up and running.
This move is part of a two-year long-running collaboration between GM and AT&T that has been tested and worked on at the GM proving grounds to make sure the network can meet both GM’s and AT&T’s quality standards. AT&T is known to have the nation’s most reliable network and Microsoft’s scalable and secure cloud services will be combined with the provided 5G network for even more integration.

This huge advancement should not only help existing technology on General Motors vehicles work faster, but will also set the groundwork for upcoming technology that the automaker plans to introduce on future products. Technology like Ultra Cruise, which is expected to be semi-autonomous driving system that can be used in more urban settings, compared to the highway-only application of Super Cruise.
Super Cruise is expected to offered on all of the General Motors T1 platform full-size trucks and SUVs as early as the 2022 model year. High-end models of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 as well as the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali have been confirmed with the technology, while upper-level 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban and 2022 GMC Yukon models will see Super Cruise trickle down to them from the Cadillac Escalade.
