Titanfall 2 community freaking out over unconfirmed hack

Source: Respawn Entertainment

A post from a Discord server alleging that Titanfall 2 is compromised on all platforms went viral on Wednesday, leading to thousands of people across Twitter and Reddit warning others to uninstall the game, or at the very least not launch it.

However, the alleged hack, as of writing this article, is completely unconfirmed with no evidence to be found of the hack anywhere.

Despite the dubious, unsupported nature of the claims, however, the internet has gone all out in its harsh criticism of Respawn for their failure to act on what can only be described, at least for now, as a rumor. The quickly spreading story has also prompted many to uninstall Titanfall 2, just to be on the safe side should the rumor provide true. Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts have yet to respond to the story.

According to the original Discord post that sparked these rumors, Titanfall 2 has a bug in the game that allows for "local execution from the server" leaving computers and consoles "vulnerable to exploits by launching the game." The post provided no concrete example or evidence of this process.

The description of the exploit sounds very similar to a remote code execution hack spotted two years in source engine games, that reportedly allowed remote code execution on another person's machine via a Steam Invite. That exploit reportedly only worked via the Invite Friend Steam API.

We will continue to look for confirmation and evidence of the exploit blowing up Respawn's timeline, but for now, know that:

  • This is unconfirmed
  • Until this is confirmed one way to the other, probably don't launch Titan Fall 2, just to be safe
