No. 3 Nebraska “Relentless” in Sweep of No. 19 Creighton

The Huskers have swept their in-state rival 12 times since 2000.

The first test for No. 3 Nebraska (6-0) came and went Wednesday night in a blur of red and blue at the CHI Health Center in Omaha.

Nebraska, who had been subject to slow starts the first couple weekends, left no doubt from the get-go against in-state rival No. 19 Creighton (6-1). The Huskers swept the Bluejays 25-14, 22, 16.

More than 11,200 were on hand, the largest NCAA regular-season crowd this year and 10th-largest regular season, volleyball-only crowd in NCAA history.

“I think we were pretty relentless tonight with our serve, block, and defense,” Nebraska coach John Cook said.

Nebraska had five aces on the night, three from Keonilei Akana. The Huskers had nine blocks on the night. That contributed to a defense that refused to let anything drop, holding Creighton to a .053 hitting percentage.

Lexi Sun led the attack with 11 kills, but once again Kayla Caffey was integral with eight kills on .462 hitting.

Nicklin Hames dished out 30 assists.

The win improves Nebraska to 20-0 all-time against Creighton.

Next up for the Huskers is another top-20 matchup as No. 20 Utah is in Lincoln Saturday.
