Apex Legends delays tap-strafing removal due to "unexpected side effects"

Respawn Entertainment announced on Monday that they will be delaying their plans to remove tap strafing from the game after they found "unexpected side effects" with the change. They assured the players that they do plan to address tap-strafing, but it will come at a later date.

The Apex Legends dev team didn't go into any details about the nature of the side effects of their planned changes. Their Tweet also implied that they may not be removing the mechanic entirely, since they specified they plan to "address some of the most egregious use cases of tap strafing" which is a hedge in comparison to their former plans to remove the tech altogether. That said, they have not in any way confirmed they plan to keep any iteration of tap-strafing, even given this wording.

The removal of tap-strafing has been highly controversial, especially among pro players where the relatively difficult tech is most common. Over a dozen pros spoke out against the plan to remove tap strafing after the change was announced in August.

More broadly, the planned removal of tap-strafing has put a spotlight on the gap between Mouse and Keyboard players and Controller players, with many MnK players calling for a tit-for-tat style nerf to aim-assist in exchange for the tap-strafing removal. Devs responded to this idea, saying that aim assist isn't meant to be used for balance, but instead for accessibility, while also confirming the yare taking a closer look at aim-assist.

It is unclear when Respawn intends to take out tap-strafing, so for those who love that movement tech, you have a new indefinite time period to use the movement ability.
