Democratic Terry McAuliffe and the Republican Glenn Youngkin are in a tight contest in the Virginia gubernatorial race, according to a new poll conducted by the Washington Post and Schar School, which was released Friday.
According to the poll results, McAuliffe, a former governor of Virginia who’s seeking to reclaim his old office in November, had 50 percent of the support among the Virginian voters, while Youngkin recorded close support of 47 percent.
The governor’s election is scheduled for November, which could forecast the political climate as the two parties are preparing for the 2022 midterms.
In July, President Joe Biden traveled to Virginia for a campaign rally to endorse McAuliffe.
“In this election and in 2022, the question the American people are going to be asking is whether or not we’re helping them and their families,” Biden said at that time. “We have to show we do understand, and we’re delivering for them, and we’re keeping our promises. We just have to keep making the case just as the Republican Party today offers nothing but fear, lies and broken promises.”
The November election is the first gubernatorial race that Virginians have the option for both in-person and mail voting after the Democratic-controlled state government passed the law changed a law that required voters to provide a valid reason to vote by mail.
