No. 12 Nebraska Begins Big Ten Season with Win at Northwestern

The Huskers stopped a three-game skid to start the Big Ten slate 1-0.

The first three-game skid in a few seasons was stopped for No. 12 Nebraska Wednesday as the Huskers took a four set win at Northwestern.

“I told the team ‘any win on the road in the Big Ten is a great win'”, Nebraska coach John Cook said.

That great win began with what is expected to be the starting lineup going forward. After experimenting with lineups and rotations through the non-conference, Cook told reporters Monday that a stable rotation was ready for conference play.

Getting the start Wednesday was Nicklin Hames, Kayla Caffey, Callie Schwarzenbach, Lindsay Krause, Ally Batenhorst, Lexi Rodiguez, and Madi Kubik. Noticeably missing is All-American Lexi Sun, who entered the match in the fourth set and sparked a run that helped Nebraska take set 25–16 and the match 3-1.

After taking the first two sets by similar 25-21 scores, Nebraska struggled against the physical offense of Northwestern who hung on for 25-23 win. It was the first set win for the Wildcats over the Huskers since November 2, 2013.

Kubik had a season-best 19 kills to lead the match. Krause matched her season-best with 15 kills on .500 hitting.

Schwarzenbach racked up seven blocks.

Hames dished out a season-high 45 assists while leading the Huskers to their second-best hitting night of the season at .308.

Next up for Nebraska is a home match with Iowa Saturday.
