A Ford Mustang Mach-E police pilot test vehicle is officially the first all-electric vehicle to pass the rigorous tests carried out by the Michigan State Police; the authority on evaluating vehicles for duty. The vehicle was tested on September 18th and 20th. MSP will publish test results on its website later this fall.
The main benchmarks that MSP cover in testing include acceleration, top speed, braking, and high speed pursuit. Some of the tests conducted inside precision driver training include the serpentine (slalom), evasive maneuvers, and skid control.
“The fact that the Mustang Mach-E successfully stood up to the grueling Michigan State Police evaluation demonstrates that Ford can build electric vehicles that are capable, tough and reliable enough for even the most challenging jobs,” said Ted Cannis, CEO of Ford Pro. “We understand the needs of our commercial customers and are committed to unlocking new electrification opportunities for them.”
Since Ford already builds both an F-150 and Explorer fit for police duty, we figure that the Mustang Mach-E could take on more of a specialty role for precincts that are interested in adding zero emission vehicles to their fleet. Ann Arbor, Michigan, is an example of a city that has already done so.
Ford Mustang Mach-E: The First Police Tested Electric Vehicle
The Mustang Mach-E isn’t the first ever all electric police vehicle to hit the streets. Fremont, California has been driving the Tesla Model S P85 model since 2019. Fremont is also where Tesla builds the Model S. But it was never tested by the Michigan State Police.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E GT has an advertised range of 270 miles and has an estimated 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds and boasts 480 peak horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque. Get the Mach-E GT Performance Edition, and that torque spec climbs to 634 lb-ft, with 0-60 dropping to 3.5 seconds, while the tires upgrade from Continental All-Seasons to Pirelli summer rubber.
When all of the testing data is published, it’s highly likely that the Mustang Mach-E will be the quickest vehicle the MSP has ever evaluated for police use. Next to none other than the Ford F-150.
