Over the last month, the Boston Red Sox have dealt with a lot of adversity. While they have gotten contributions across the roster one player who stood out was Jose Iglesias. The Cuban native was claimed off waivers a month ago when the Red Sox had a Covid-19 outbreak. In his second stint with Boston, he surpassed expectations. While Iglesias is not eligible for the playoffs the Red Sox would not be there without him.
In 23 games for the Red Sox, Iglesias hit .356. The 31-year-old had 21 hits in 59 at-bats. While the veteran infielder was never known for his offense, he provided the Red Sox lineup with a spark. With key pieces out of action, he helped fill the void and was impressive at times defensively.
During his second stint with Boston, Iglesias only committed one error. After struggling with the Angels, he posted a .978 fielding percentage with Boston. As the Red Sox were on the verge of collapse, Iglesias helped keep them afloat. In September and October, only Kyle Schwarber was the only Red Sox player who recorded a higher slugging percentage than Iglesias.

Due to his production, Iglesias was hard to keep off the field in September. After rejoining the Red Sox, he started every game on the schedule. For a team searching for stability, their former top 10 prospect delivered. With free agency only months away, the 31-year-old showed that he could still be a productive piece. While it was a small sample size, he did not waste his opportunity.

As the Red Sox look to make a deep playoff run, their roster looks very different from a month ago. Christian Arroyo, who was a key piece early on, is healthy and will be needed over the next few weeks. When asked about Iglesias’s impact, Arroyo said, “He’s been a huge help for our team, and he’s come through in the clutch. He’s just been a phenomenal addition.”
While the Red Sox 2021 story is still being written, Iglesias etched his name in an important chapter. Regardless of how far this Red Sox team goes in the playoffs, Iglesias provided plenty of memorable moments in an effort that helped keep Boston in the playoff picture.
