How big data is helping make transport cleaner in Dubai

Dubai plans to use new technologies and the mass collection of data to optimize its citizens' mobility. The idea is to identify scenarios that allow for better traffic flow while also making all the city's transportation cleaner.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is an independent government authority in charge of roads and transport in Dubai. It recently made several announcements aimed at optimizing traffic flow and making transport cleaner throughout the emirate.

This vast project will be based on the collection of all kinds of data in the aim of transforming transportation, public or otherwise. While drawing on big data, the project also puts artificial intelligence at the service of the population. By gathering data on public transport and cab traffic or hotel occupancy, for example, the "Dubai in Motion" program will be able to create optimized mobility "scenarios" and thus make adjustments to improve people's mobility and develop even cleaner and more sustainable transport. In the long term, this program should also help in the planning of future green spaces and infrastructure dedicated to soft mobility.

But the RTA is not stopping there. The authority also plans to use artificial intelligence for its bike paths, to count the number of users and monitor compliance with traffic regulations and basic safety rules. Another upcoming project is a new generation of smart displays that will relay information to public transport users to help them better organize their trips. Plus, Dubai aims to transform 25% of its total transportation to autonomous mode by 2030, whether on the ground or even in the air!
